After a year of living in The Fan and taking many evening walks up and down Floyd and Grove, I have familiarized myself with all the neighborhood cats, but also admired the architecture throughout the neighborhood. I find the ironwork particularly charming ...
Ironwork in Richmond can be traced back to 1819 with the cast-iron fence in Capital Square (this has since been reproduced) and the most elaborate and ornamental examples of ironwork can be found in Hollywood Cemetery. A variety of decorative patterns can still be seen today in the older neighborhoods of the city from The Fan to Church Hill.
This zine contains some of my favorite instances of cast iron (historical and contemporary) that I have seen on my walking routes reinterpreted with pixelated illustrations to highlight the patterns. I think it could be fun to use these as charts for beading, perler beads, crochet, etc.. in the future!
